John Callaghan grew up in the rugged WA mining town of Kalgoorlie/Boulder, where he got his love of the land and its people.
He is a singer/songwriter who is a very proud and parochial Aussie. John describes himself as a singing storyteller, who likes to draw the listener into the visualization of the songs he sings.
John says he has been singing for as long as he can remember. He was the lead singer/songwriter in a moderately successful Queensland country-dance band years ago, called ‘Stratus’, before he decided on a family and a solo career.
Always wanting to take the next step, John decided in 2012 that it was time to get all his ‘ducks’ in a row and forge ahead with a new album, so he gathered up his songs and headed for the recording studio to record his long dreamed of album, which he called, “This Day Would Come”.
“This Day would Come” was recorded at Redbrick in SA with Anthony Stuart and many talented Aussie musicians including, Vaughan Jones, Hamish Davidson, Trent Williamson, Dale Moore and Brad Bergen.
He has written many songs over the years, and has recorded several albums, with moderate success. Most notably, “Waltzing Matera” & “Stand Up” which has become his signature song. He was commissioned by Western Mining to write a song about the WA School of Mines in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, and performed it at their charity ball.
He was also commissioned by the Shire of Coolgardie to write a song for their centenary and history, in the late 1990’s.
In addition, he was also asked to write and perform a song for the Federation of the National standard gauge rail line in Wallangara, on the border of Qld & NSW, where he performed with many other great Aussie country singers, including James Blundell.
John also writes songs for people who are having a birthday, an anniversary or that special occasion. ”I find out about them and what style of music it is they like, and then record a song especially for them, and sometimes perform it at their party”.
John sings at RSL clubs, lifestyle villages, clubs, prisons and churches, where his special brand of music and his songs about family, the Australian land and its people, reach out and touch the hearts of those who listen. John’s favorite saying is,
“Music is the Elixir of the soul. It enables people to forget for a while about their daily lives and be transported, through song, to another place and time”.
John has won many awards over the years for his vocal, songwriting and entertaining ability and has played as a support act to Johnny Cash, Don Williams and many other great Australian Country Music Singer/songwriters.
John is available for concerts, festivals, town fairs and gigs throughout Australia, NZ or anywhere else you may require him to share his songs.
